Candy Hemphill Christmas
Candy Hemphill Christmas is a third-generation gospel singer beginning with her grandmother's siblings, The Happy Goodman Family. At 13 Candy made her first appearance on record when she sang "I Came On Business For The King". The song written by her dad became a favorite and introduced Candy as a promising new talent in Gospel Music. She is also a gifted writer and penned many of the songs that she has recorded such as Open My Eyes and You Make Me Want To Sing.
Now married to Kent Christmas, a dynamic young evangelist, Candy's name ironically became Candy Christmas. She is the proud mother of two children Jasmine age 18 and Nicholas 12. They reside in Nashville, less than 10 minutes from Joel & LaBreeska. Her musical talents include guitar and piano and she is currently participating in the well loved and very popular Gaither Video series.
Candy Christmas is the Founder and President of The Bridge Ministry, Inc. Candy has spent her life giving to others through music. She began her career as an adolescent, and quickly climbed to the top of the Christian charts. Later, she married and happily settled into family life, but she wanted a way to continue her ministry of giving. Her heart's desire is to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. That is what prompted her to start The Bridge Ministry in 2004.
Candy has also founded the Food for Kids program. Volunteers go every Friday and fill backpacks for underprivileged children in the Nashville area who are on free or assisted meal programs. ''We served do this because I have a purpose.'' 36,000 snacks to school children last year!'' she exclaims with a glowing smile. ''We get permission from parents to send grocery bags of snacks home for the weekend and they love it! On Mother's Day, the children were able to take jewelry and make-up items home to their moms. It enabled them to give something special to their mothers on this significant day.''
''My focus has changed,'' she says with passion. ''I have found purpose - to help the poor and take care of people who can't help themselves. I want to share the mercy God has put in my heart for people who have fallen on hard times and to express my love for them. I don't care if you're rich or poor, no one can resist love. We go in with no agenda, only with love, saying, 'We're not trying to sell you anything.' I don't care if they're prostitutes, addicts, whatever... I just want to love people into the Kingdom of God.''
